A clinical plan that meets you at the kitchen counter.
Our weight loss program follows APOP and WSAVA clinical guidelines — and it lives inside your real day-to-day. Here's exactly what happens from your first call to a healthier weigh-in.
- 01
Intake & conversation
You complete a canine or feline intake questionnaire that goes beyond food and weight — your pet's routine, motivations, who feeds them, the treats that rule the household. We read every word before your visit.
- 02
Clinical assessment
In clinic we use the validated 9-point Body Condition Score plus four circumference measurements (waist, chest, neck, hip). We screen for endocrine disease and orthopedic concerns that affect a plan.
- 03
Personalized plan
We calculate Ideal Body Weight, daily weight-loss calories (RER-based), and recommend a food strategy that fits your pet's medical history and your household — including treat math that still lets love through.
- 04
The journal
You can fill out a tracking journal on our resources page: weekly weigh-ins, daily food, treats, exercise, and notes. Small consistent inputs are what create the trend line we're looking for.
- 05
4-day phone check-in
Our vet tech calls within 4 days to confirm the diet has started, troubleshoot measuring and treats, and surface any early intolerance — vomiting, refusal, or unexpected behavior changes.
- 06
Biweekly support
Phone check-ins every two weeks keep momentum honest. We adjust calories, swap foods, and recalibrate exercise as your pet's body changes.
- 07
In-clinic rechecks
Periodic in-clinic weigh-ins (no charge) confirm we're hitting the 0.5–1% per week sweet spot — gentle, lean-mass preserving, and sustainable.

Nutrition, measured.
We feed weight-loss calories based on your pet's ideal body weight, not their current weight. Protein is kept high to preserve lean mass — at least 25% of metabolizable energy for dogs, 35%+ for cats. And yes, treats can stay in the plan: up to 10% of daily kcal.
- High-fiber Rx diets for food-motivated dogs and multi-pet homes
- High-protein, low-carb diets — especially for cats
- Wet vs. dry guidance based on your pet's needs and your routine
- Special-population protocols (diabetes, CKD, arthritis)
Movement, gradually.
For dogs, we start at 10–15 minutes of brisk walking twice daily and build duration before intensity. For cats — yes, cats — we prescribe 2× daily play sessions of 5–10 active minutes using wand toys, puzzle feeders, and perches that reward curiosity.
We're careful with heat, brachycephalic breeds, and joint disease. Hydrotherapy and underwater treadmill are excellent options for arthritic patients.
